I seriously hated Faust when I had to read parts of it in my last German class, but I absolutely love Die Leiden des Jungen Werther
Just read:
“Everything, everything is populated by thousands of forms; and then people shelter together in little houses, settle in, and imagine that they rule the whole world! Poor fool, you look down at everything because you’re so small”
“There’s no instant which doesn’t consume you and your loved ones around you, no instant when you yourself aren’t, can help being, a destroyer; the most innocent stroll costs the lives of a thousand poor worms, one footstep demolishes the painstaking construction of an anthill, treading that microcosm into a wretched grave. Ha! It’s not the large-scale, rarely occurring disasters in the world, those floods which wash away your villages, those earthquakes which swallow up your cities, that affect me; my heart is undermined by the consuming force concealed in all of nature, which has created nothing that doesn’t destroy its neighbor and itself. And so I reel about in anxiety! Heaven and earth and their creative forces all around me, and I see nothing but a monster eternally swallowing, eternally chewing its cud.”
No if that aint the romantic period for you, I don’t know what is.

I love them all so much, I don’t care if it’s a horrible show, it’s my guilty pleasure. Yes, I am every 20-something girl cliche, and yes I do want to be Zooey Deschanel.
